One of my key players is going through a really rough personal situation right now. I won't go into details out of respect for their privacy, but it's serious and legitimately affecting their ability to focus on work, great performer, totally reliable until this situation hit about three weeks ago and since then, productivity has dropped significantly. I've been trying to be understanding and accommodating, but we're on a project with a hard external deadline that we absolutely cannot miss
I've had a couple of compassionate conversations where I offered flexibility and asked what support they need but I got vague answers about working through it and promises things would improve, they're not improving though, and now I'm in a position where I need to either redistribute their work to an already stretched team or risk the project timeline.
And yes the company has benefits like EAP and personal leave, but this person doesn't want to take time off because they say work is a helpful distraction. So how can I effectively navigate this kind of situation without either abandoning the person or sacrificing the project? I'm losing sleep over this and could really use some perspective
