Resource allocation plan vs. resource calendar

I ran into a bit of confusion during a recent project meeting and figured this community might have some good insight. We were discussing a scheduling bottleneck, and someone mentioned that the resource allocation plan should’ve shown us the availability issue before it happened but another team member argued that it’s actually the resource calendar that’s meant to highlight who’s available and when.
In my experience, the resource allocation plan is more about how we’re distributing work across the team and making sure no one is overloaded. The resource calendar, on the other hand, feels more like the day to day visibility tool that shows vacations, public holidays, and other commitments that affect actual availability.
Do you rely more on the allocation plan to catch potential clashes early, or is the resource calendar your go-to for spotting gaps and conflicts? appreciate any thoughts in advance

My PM uses both together, allocation to plan ahead nd then calendar to keep things in real time check

@asset.mngr I think of it as a hierarchy. The Resource Calendar provides the input. The Resource Allocation Plan uses that input to create the output.
If the assigned hours exceed the available hours, you have a problem. In a mature PMO, you absolutely need both, but the Calendar is the foundational tool that makes the Plan realistic

Both the resource allocation plan and the resource calendar are important, complementary tools for managing availability. relying solely on one would make it an incomplete approach.
The allocation plan should show potential availability issues if it incorporates accurate data, and the resource calendar is the definitive source for actual availability data
