Daily standups turning into status reports

We transitioned to scrum about 4 months ago and our daily standups have devolved into everyone just reporting what they did yesterday to the SM and it's become this awkward thing where people are clearly just waiting for their turn to talk and not actually collaborating. They're all pretty senior colleagues so I don't think it's a lack of understanding, more like old habits. I'm thinking about switching up the format entirely or maybe doing async standups a few days a week, but I'm feeling like that'll be just admitting defeat
I'm open to any ideas that have actually worked for your teams please

The goal of a Daily Scrum is for team members to collaborate and create a shared plan for the next 24 hours, not report status to a manager
re-engage senior colleagues and foster true collaboration, you can shift the focus from "what I did" to "what's next for the team to achieve the Sprint Goal". This encourages collaboration and removes the waiting for my turn dynamic

@kimberly kim Try shifting the focus from “what did you do?” to “what’s blocking the team?” I think that keeps it collaborative, not just status.
