Curious to hear perspectives on this, it feels like every PM I meet now has at least a PMP, scrum master cert, or some combination of credentials. Ten years ago having a PMP meant something because it was less common. Now it's almost expected as a baseline.
So the question is: do certifications still help you differentiate yourself and command higher rates, or have they become so widespread that they're just table stakes and don't actually set you apart anymore?
Someone sought my counsel whether to invest time and money into additional certifications or if that energy is better spent building actual project portfolios and real results that demonstrate value.
